The Governing Body 1
Our Governing Body - an overview.
Our Governing Body consists of 18 members -
6 are elected by the parents - Parent Governors
2 are elected by the teachers - Staff Governors
1 is elected by the support staff of the school - Staff Governor
4 are appointed by the Local Education Authority - LEA Governors
4 are appointed/elected by the Governing Body - Community Governors
1 space is reserved for the Head Teacher, Ms Ivatt. If she chooses not to be a Governor, the space cannot be used by anyone else.
Governors have no powers as individuals. They only have power as a Body. Sometimes, however, the full Body will devolve power to a committee (eg. sometimes the Finance Committee is granted the power to respond on behalf of the Governing Body to consultation documents) The Chair of Governors has executive power to respond on behalf of the Governing Body in an emergency or where a short notice response is needed.
The Governing Body (GB) is required by law to meet 3 times a year. The volume of business is so great, however, that this GB chooses to meet at least 6 times a year - once in each half term.
Most of the work of the GB takes place outside of the main meetings in Committee. The GB has five main committees. They are -
Curriculum: This committee is concerned with teaching and learning. They see policy documents and long-term curriculum plans. They monitor children's work to see that agreed policies are carried out in the classroom.
Finance Committee: This committee controls all the financial aspects of school life, sets the budget each year and monitors spending patterns. They also see that there are proper financial controls and that all accounts are audited.
Staff/Pupil: This is our human resources committee. It deals with the appointment of staff, with classes and class sizes, with admissions and with the general ethos of the school.
It is interested in the provision of support for all children, including the more able and those on the Special Needs Register. They monitor all test results and study trends over a period of time.
Premises Committee: This committee is responsible for any matter concerning the school site. They monitor energy usage, keep an eye on health and safety matters, inspect the building regularly and agree maintenance programmes.
Each committee elects its own Chair and arranges its own minutes.
There are other committees of a statutory nature. These meet extremely rarely and are generally made up of experienced Governors.
There is also one ad-hoc committee - the Cabinet. This consists of the Chair, the Head Teacher & the Chairs of each main committee. This committee has no power in itself but contains vast experience. It considers matters which are cross committee or will advise the Chair /Head Teacher on complex items. Any decisions this committee reaches are reported back to the GB by the Chair for formal approval.
On the next few pages you can meet our Governors.
